The Board of Directors of the St. Marys United Methodist Church Foundation, Inc. has announced it will be awarding $1,023,900 in grants during the Spring 2007 Grant Cycle. Grants will be distributed during the week of June 4, 2007 to the following non-profit organizations:

 

A $35,000 grant to the Camden County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program to establish a new Family Service Coordinator staff position. CASA is a statewide program, established in Camden County in 1997 to provide advocacy services for abused and neglected children in Camden County who have been placed in foster care. Advocacy services are provided through trained volunteers who are appointed by the Juvenile Court to represent the child until the child is placed in a permanent and safe home.  The new staff position will help facilitate a reduction in the amount of time a child spends in foster care.

 

A $20,000 grant to the Gathering Place in Brunswick, Georgia to assist in the support of the operating budget for the Urban Ministry Development Program. The Gathering Place, established in 1981, is a multifaceted, youth oriented Christian ministry serving Glynn County. Specifically, the Urban Ministry Development Program will target “at risk” urban students grades 6 – 12 in Glynn County that may otherwise not have the opportunity to hear the Good News.

 

A $1,100 grant to the Girl Scout Council of Savannah to support a week-long summer day camp in Camden County.  The Girl Scout Council of Savannah seeks to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who would make the world a better place. 

 

An $82,000 grant to the Vashti Center in Thomasville, Georgia to support the transition of services from residential to a predominately community-based approach. The Vashti Center is an agency of the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church providing a number of various services to children including an emergency shelter, long-term basic care, intermediate residential treatment for emotionally disturbed children, a home for teen mothers and their infant children, marriage and family counseling, and basic education for at-risk youth who have been removed from the public education system.

 

A $100,000 grant to the Wesley Community Center in Savannah, Georgia to support the FY2007 operating budget.  The Wesley Community Center is an agency of the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church which serves children of all abilities, and has many programs and services to cater to the needs of low and moderate-income women, children, youth and families throughout Savannah and the surrounding area.

 

A $10,000 grant to Alzheimer’s of Glynn / Brunswick to provide in-home respite care to low and moderate income families in Glynn and surrounding counties.  Alzheimer’s of Glynn/Brunswick, Inc. was formed for the purpose of providing assistance and support to persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and their families.

 

A $10,000 grant to Epworth By The Sea to sponsor Miss Ella’s Camp For Special People in 2007. Epworth By The Sea is a Christian retreat center owned and operated by the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.  The summer camp is provided to people, ages 16 and above with special mental and physical needs offering worship services, Bible study, exciting activities, music, games, quality craft projects and supervised recreation that enhance the camper’s life. Additionally, the camp provides family caretakers with respite time for personal renewal.
