The Board of Directors of the St. Marys United Methodist Church Foundation, Inc. announced it awarded $1,000,000 in grants during the Spring 2006 Grant Cycle. Grants were distributed during the week of June 5, 2006 to the following non-profit organizations:

 

A $25,000 grant to the Gathering Place in Brunswick, Georgia to assist in the support of their FY2006 operating budget. The Gathering Place, established in 1981, is a multifaceted, youth oriented Christian ministry serving Glynn County. Specifically, the grant will support the Spiritual Leadership Development Program to identify, develop and deploy young leaders into local churches.

 

An $18,000 grant to Lighthouse Christian Broadcasting (WECC-FM89.3) to support the salary of the youth minister for The Rock, a youth outreach ministry of the radio station.

 

A $100,000 grant to the Wesley Community Center in Savannah, Georgia to support the FY2006 operating budget.  The Wesley Community Center is an agency of the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church which serves children of all abilities, and has many programs and services to cater to the needs of low and moderate-income women, children, youth and families throughout Savannah and the surrounding area.

 

A $20,000 grant to the Woodbine Cooperative Parish, which is a ministry of the South Georgia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and serves the Clinch Chapel UMC, Hamilton Chapel and Oak Hill UMC.  The grant is to support the Project Progress Ministry to Children and Youth for one year.  The Project Progress Ministry to Children and Youth is community based and provides after school activities to children in grades K-8 that live in rural Camden County.  Activities include educational assistance such as tutoring, homework assistance and social education.

 

A $10,000 grant to Epworth By The Sea to sponsor Miss Ella’s Camp For Special People in 2006. Epworth By The Sea is a Christian retreat center owned and operated by the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.  The summer camp is provided to people, ages 16 and above with special mental and physical needs offering worship services, Bible study, exciting activities, music, games, quality craft projects and supervised recreation that enhance the camper’s life. Additionally, the camp provides family caretakers with respite time for personal renewal.

 

A $197,000 grant to Wesley Glen Ministries to be provided in two segments: $149,000 to support the FY2007 operating budget of the St. Marys Group Home and $48,000 to support the FY2007 operating budget for the overall organization.  Wesley Glen is a ministry of the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church and serves people with mental disabilities in central and south Georgia. The St. Marys facility provides a residential home environment and cares for up to five residents.

 

A $135,000 grant to the Society of St. Andrew to establish and support the first year of operations for a regional gleaning office located in south Georgia.  The Society of St. Andrew is a ministry of the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church which distributes millions of pounds of food annually to food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, churches for local distribution and individuals.
